One of the most challenging and enjoyable parts of turkey hunting is turkey "calling". Various types of calls are used to mimic the natural “talk” of the wild turkey. By mimicking a female the hunter attempts to entice the gobbler into range. To hear the various sounds or “calls” of the wild turkey click here.
Calling Contests
During the “off” season turkey hunters practice their calling by competing in Calling Contests where they test their skills against other “callers”. The Houston Chapter helps with two such contests in this area, The Texas State Calling Contest and the Bass Pro Spring Classic. Winners of the Open division in each of these contests are eligible to compete on the National Level. Each of these contests also have Hunter and Junior divisions.
Calling Seminars
The Houston Chapter holds several workshops through out the year to help hunters hone their calling skills or learn new tactics. Just contact us for more info or to set up a seminar for your group.

2011 NWTF Texas State Championship Louie Wiess IV of Pearland dominated the competition in both the State and Open Divisions of the 2011 Texas State Turkey Calling Championships, held January 15th at Cabela’s in Buda, south of Austin. Once again, Louie added the title of “2011 Texas Champion” to his four previous victories in 2003, 2006, 2007, & 2009, thereby claiming first prize money of $500 for the State win, in addition to a $400 Cabela’s gift card for his Open Division victory. Trophy plaques, cash, gift cards, and merchandise totaled more than $2,800 for 15 winners in this year’s event.
Wiess also placed 2nd in the Friction Division, one point behind the winner, 17 year-old Mikayla Nixon of Diana, Texas, in one of the closest finishes to date at the annual State Calling Contest. Dad, Shaine Nixon, finished only two points off the pace for a solid 3rd in friction calling. Mikayla demonstrated her outstanding skills by also taking 1st in the Junior (JAKES) Division; confirming M.C. Bob Linder’s remark that “Mikayla has called at the NWTF Grand Nationals, and her performance today only proves that this certainly isn’t her first rodeo.”
Other standout callers included newcomers, Dalton Aarness of Dripping Springs, who placed 3rd in the State Division, along with Aaron Barton of Lampasas, with a 3rd place finish in Open Division competition. Count both of these young callers as forces to be reckoned with in future NWTF events.
